Chigwell is a civil parish in the Epping Forest district of Essex, some 11 miles from the centre of London. It is served by a tube station on the Central line. Chigwell now has many large houses such as those on Manor Road and the High Road and is widely regarded as an affluent area, alongside Loughton and Buckhurst Hill, nicknamed ‘the Essex golden triangle’. Chigwell School, a public school, was founded in 1629. Among its many famous past pupils is William Penn, who later went on to found Pennsylvania. Whilst having the population of a small town, Chigwell retains its village status and atmosphere with shopping confined to a few parades. Much of the centre of the old Chigwell Village, including Chigwell school, St Mary’s church and the King’s Head public house (which formed the basis for Charles Dickens’ description of the ‘Maypole’ inn in Barnaby Rudge) is a conservation area. Dickens frequently visited Chigwell, which he described in a letter as "the greatest place in the world...Such a delicious old inn opposite the church...such beautiful forest scenery...such an out of the way rural place!". Chigwell borders both Epping Forest and Hainault Forest through which Chigwell Brook still meanders. Essex Tourism - 0871 716 2199 Calls cost less than 10p per minute
