Earls Colne is a village in Essex named after the River Colne on which it stands, and the Earls of Oxford who held the manor between 1086 until 1703. A monastery, Colne Priory, was founded in the parish in about 1103 for monks of the Benedictine order. The monastery buildings fell into ruin, and most of the remains were swept away when the present house was built in 1826. The site of the old church and monastery is now scheduled as a national monument and a cross has been placed beyond which their former site can be viewed. The parish church is dedicated to St. Andrew and was built between 1313 and 1360, the present tower was started in 1460 and completed in 1534. Nearby Chalkney Wood is wonderful for walking and Earls Colne has a number of shops and services situated in the High Street. The Earls Colne Heritage Museum occupies The Old Water Tower, Reuben Hunt Walk, which was the former water tower of the Atlas Works, the home of R Hunt & Company, once prestigious manufacturers of agricultural equipment. Earls Colne Airfield was a bomber station used by the RAF and USAAF between 1942 and 1955. It is now a golf course, business park and airfield for light aviation.
