Great Bardfield is a charming village in the county of Essex and is home to nearly thirteen hundred people. Positioned on the banks of the River Pant it has a wealth of ancient buildings that date back far in time to the 14th, 15th,and 16th Centuries. The village has an interesting history from Henry VIII who gave the Great Lodge to Anne of Cleves in a divorce settlement, to an abundance of Artists who lived here who produced fabulous pieces of art in the 1950's. They exhibited their work and drew thousands from London and the surrounding areas. From its agricultural beginnings the village grew, but still remains largely unspoilt, a stroll around the village will prove pleasurable with the sights on offer from the ancient Museum, 12th Century church set high on a hill which has an intricate Medieval screen. There's also the intriguing Lock Up which housed villains in the 19th century, the Bardfield Cage can be discovered in the centre of the village on Bridge Street, and with the touch of a button shares its history. There are a few shops, an impressive theatre which is held in an ancient barn, pubs offering a warm welcome, and a chance to explore footpaths and bridleways in the attractive countryside.
