Hornchurch is a suburban town in the London Borough of Havering in East London, 15 miles from Charing Cross. During World Wars I and II nearby Hornchurch Airfield was an important RAF station, home to a number of Spitfire squadrons. The land has since been reused for a large housing development and Hornchurch Country Park. The River Ingrebourne passes through the park and it forms part of Thames Chase Community Forest. Hornchurch probably gets its name from an architectural feature of Saint Andrews church near the town centre. It was recorded as ‘Hornechurch’ in 1233 meaning 'church with horn-like gables'. The horned bull's head mounted on the eastern end of the church dates from around the 18th Century. Hornchurch has a growing number of restaurants and bars, and an assortment of shops around the High Street and Station Lane areas. Hornchurch is home to the Queen's Theatre, a modern 500-seat theatre located on Billet Lane. The theatre originally opened in 1953 in a converted, and for some time derelict, cinema on Station Lane. Harrow Lodge Sports Centre serves local recreational needs, and Hornchurch Station is on the London Underground District Line, located a short walk south from the town centre.
