Stanford Le Hope is a town situated in the county of Essex, within the unitary authority of Thurrock, some 23 miles east of London. Stanford Le Hope is referenced in the Domesday Book as ‘Hassenbrooke’. It became Stanford Hoope at the bequest of Henry VIII to Walter Farr in 1543. A small stream known as the Hassingbrook runs through the village. The parish church of St Margaret’s dates from 1180, with the south chapel being rebuilt in the 15th century and the whole building being restored from 1874. The town’s principal claim to fame is that Joseph Conrad lived and wrote there for a while. Nearby attractions include Walton Hall Museum of Memorabilia, housed in a 17th century barn. There’s a diverse collection including militaria, motoring, and household items, plus the old village bakery. It’s open Saturdays, Sundays, Bank Holidays and school holidays between Easter and October. One of the main local industries is the nearby oil refinery at Shell Haven. There are several pubs in the town including Inn on the Green and Lakeside Shopping Centre is a 10 minute drive away. Leisure facilities include golf at the St Cleres Hall Golf Club and the 400 acre Langdon Hills Country Park.
