Stock is a village in south Essex. It is located approximately 6 miles south of the county town of Chelmsford, in the borough of Chelmsford. The village of Stock is one of the highest points in Essex. The village High Street was probably a track in pre-Roman times running through the once great ancient forests of Epping and Hainault. Stock is most famous for its windmill, an early 19th century tower mill on five floors, with late 19th century machinery, restored to working order, it’s open April to September, second Sunday of the month. Other attractions include Great Stocks Vineyard, a 10 acre vineyard set in peaceful countryside with two coarse fishing. Guided tours and tastings for groups of 12-40 people at weekends and evenings, May to October. Until as recently as 1948 the Parish of Buttsbury embraced a large part of the village including half the High Street, the boundary line between the two parishes running down the middle of Mill Road, and through the centre of the old hostelry "The Cock", which survives to this day as a traditional ‘good eating pub’ on the High Street, along with the The Hoop and The Bear Inn on The Square.
