Walton-on-the-Naze is a small town in Essex, on the Tendring Peninsula, about 85 miles north east of London. It is a quaint seaside resort, with The Naze being the main tourist attraction. There is also a Walton pier and The Naze itself is about 1.5 miles north of the pier. The Naze is a Site of Special Scientific Interest due to its fossil cliffs, and a public footpath stretches along the cliff tops. The John Weston Nature Reserve on the Naze is a Special Protection Area and the area of water behind the Naze, called Hamford Water and Walton Backwaters, is recognised as being an internationally important wetland for birds. Wildlife boat trips are available to view some of Walton's wildlife which also includes seals. The Naze tower was built in 1721 to guide shipping to the busy port of Harwich. Today the tower is an Art Gallery, Museum and Café. Other attractions include Walton Maritime Museum in the old lifeboat house; and the Titchmarsh Marina. There is a multi-purpose entertainment and conference centre named The Columbine Centre and other leisure attractions include an indoor swimming pool on the Bathhouse Meadow. There’s a weekly Thursday market in Millennium Square.
