West Thurrock is an area within the Borough of Thurrock in Essex, 17.5 miles from Charing Cross. It is the location of the Lakeside Shopping Centre and retail park, one of the largest shopping areas in Europe, on a site of 200 acres. There are 231 shops as well as the 26 acre Alexandra Lake with its diving school complex. The vast Vue cinema recently re-launched as a 9 screen state of the art cinema complex with stadium seating, reclinable armchair-style seating, and a combination of giant beanbags and sofas. It’s the first of its kind in the UK. The 380kV Thames Crossing, an overhead powerline crossing the River Thames, is in West Thurrock. Its towers are the tallest electricity pylons in the UK. The 12th century St Clement's Church in West Thurrock, although now redundant, appeared in the film Four Weddings and a Funeral and was once a stopping point for pilgrims. Visitors can see the remains of its original round tower and also a mass grave to the boys of the reformatory ship Cornwall who were drowned in an accident off Purfleet. Arena Essex hosts regular banger racing, hot rods and stock cars at the track in West Thurrock, as well as Lakeside Karting where you can "arrive and drive".
