Woodford Bridge is a suburban district in the London Borough of Redbridge. It gets its name from the Saxon ford over the River Roding. Historically a part of the county of Essex, Woodford may be divided into three areas: Woodford Bridge, South Woodford and Woodford Green. The ancient parish of Woodford, also known as Woodford St Mary, formed part of the Becontree hundred of Essex. Woodford Bridge was a village at one point and still retains some of the village feel, especially with the authentic street lighting. However, there are tube stops at South Woodford and Woodford on the Central Line. The parish church of St. Mary's is known to have existed from the 12th century and is located on the High Road in South Woodford. St. Paul's Parish Church in Woodford Bridge was erected in 1854 in order that people did not have to walk all the way from St Mary’s. Suffragette campaigner, Sylvia Pankhurst, lived in Woodford Green, and a small green near Woodford Station has been named Pankhurst Green. Hurst House, built in 1714, overlooks the green at Woodford and a bronze statue of Winston Churchill stands on the green to commemorate his 40 years as MP for Wanstead and Woodford.
