Chideock lies on the A35 between Bridport and Lyme Regis. It is directly north of the coastal resort of Seatown and it is a part of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. Chideock is traditionally staunch Roman Catholic country and the Chideock martyrs were taken from Chideock House or Castle. It is now the Chideock House Hotel, complete with priest's holes. Cob and sandstone cottages, some of them with thatched roofs, fill the village making it a fine example of a picturesque old English village. In the 18th century, the coast between Seatown and Charmouth was the territory of the notorious Chideock Gang of local smugglers. The gangs' leader was known as 'The Colonel' and was almost certainly a local gent who had military training. The gang used the top of the 617 foot High Golden Cap as their lookout post. Visitors to Chideock should take in the beautiful St Giles church, which contains a black marble effigy of a knight from the 16th century. You can enjoy a meal at the George Inn on Main Street, alternatively there is the Clock House Inn. You could stay at Rose Cottage, a recently renovated character cottage that is one of the original cottages of the village.
