Set in the heart of the beautiful English county of Dorset, picturesque Cranborne lies in the centre of Cranborne Chase. It is at the eastern end of the county not far from Verwood. The Royal Forest of Cranborne was claimed by William the Conqueror in the 11th century and covers around 100 square miles. Back in that time it would have been much more heavily wooded. Cranborne Chase now consists mainly of heath and rough pasture with occasional patches of woodland. There are many fine local walks encompassing several small villages. Those interested in archaeology will find the Ancient Technology Centre at Cranborne of immense interest. The educational Centre comprises reconstructed buildings from throughout history. They have been built by about 80,000 Dorset school students and older volunteers. Using ancient skills and archaeological evidence, visitors take part in a range of projects reflecting ancient life. Cranborne Village is at the centre of the Cranborne Estate. The Manor House belongs to the Marquess of Salisbury. The 17th century gardens open each Wednesday during the summer season but the garden centre is open all year around. The village was visited by Thomas Hardy and was featured in a poem by Rupert Brookes.
