Sturminster Newton is a charming small market town on the south-eastern side of the Blackmore Vale. It is a traditional Dorset town, developed to cater for the needs of local agriculture. Situated on the River Stour, it is half way between Blandford Forum and Sherborne. The town was originally situated at the historic fording point of the River Stour, which was replaced by a stone bridge in the 16th century. The bridge still stands today. The economy of the area is dominated by dairy agriculture. The town hosts an annual cheese festival and in 2007 this festival attracted over 11,000 visitors! There is a weekly market, held on Mondays. Until 1998 one of the largest cattle markets in England was also held in Sturminster Newton. The majority of the town's shops and services lie on the north side of the river, whilst Newton and Broad Oak lie to the south. A wide flood plain divides these areas. The town centre is the stuff of picture postcards. It comprises a mixture of traditional 16th and 17th century cottages, Georgian stone buildings and 19th century brick buildings. It offers charming shops and picturesque pubs, including The White Hart and The Swan Inn.
