The village of Winkton lies in the Avon Valley on the Ringwood to Christchurch Road. The village is currently part of Hampshire. In its rural setting, Winkton is a fine example of a charming old English village. Its origins date back to the Domesday Book of 1086, when it was known as Weringtone. The name probably refers to the fact that it was the spoils of a battle between Vikings and Saxons. The village comprises a mixture of buildings with small rows of terraced cottages from various periods as well as imposing houses and gardens dating from the 18th to the 20th century. Many Americans will have a particular connection with Winkton thanks to nearby RAF Winkton, otherwise known as USAAF Station 414 or Winkton Advanced Landing Ground. The USA's 404th Fighter Group arrived at the station in 1944 and provided air support for operations until the end of the war, including the Normandy landings and the Battle of the Bulge. The comforts of the Fisherman's Haunt are ideal for those wishing to revisit their wartime haunts, or for visitors coming to the place where their parents or grandparents were stationed. The Fisherman's Haunt is a charming old world inn that dates back to 1673.
