Perhaps it is its utter lack of concession to the tourist industry that makes Clovelly in North Devon the ideal holiday destination for those wanting to avoid all that goes with the over-commercialised tourist resort. Traffic is banned from the high street and for those not fancying the cobbled walk dropping 400ft in the half mile down to the harbour, a landrover service is provided via the back roads as far as the Red Lion pub. The high street is lined with traditional 16th Century cottages and at the top of the hill is a Heritage Centre. The modern landrover service replaces the donkeys once used to carry visitors through Clovelly. No holiday cottages are allowed in the main village and deliveries are made by sledge. Fishermen are still to be seen mending their nets along the Quay. Those feeling adventurous and energetic enough for a testing coastal walk will be rewarded with breathtaking views and revitalising sea air. The coastal path leads West down to Mouth Mill, rising again to Hartland Point, a challenging 8 mile walk. Hartland Quay was once a busy harbour, dramatically destroyed by the Atlantic breakers. The Hartland Quay Museum marks this coastal heritage location.
