Set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Devon market town of Crediton lies 7 miles from Exeter and is convenient for exploring both Exmoor and Dartmoor. For most of this historic town’s life it has been a farming community, located in an area of fertile red land. It was also a centre for woollen cloth manufacturing, an industry carried out by workers in their homes, providing labour for the entire family. The men worked the looms, their wives spun and the children combed and carded the wool. Crediton serge cloth was of an extremely high quality and exported worldwide. Towards the 19th Century as competition drove them away from the wool industry, Crediton embraced the leather industry and began to manufacture boots and shoes in factories rather than homes. Nowadays, activities such as golf, fishing, rambling, rock climbing, orienteering, riding and water sports are all within reach of visitors to Crediton. In the town’s shops and farmer’s market held the first Saturday of the month, can be purchased locally grown and produced game, beef, organic vegetables and cheeses. For those interested in the cheese making process, there are several dairies and creameries around Crediton open to the public.
