While the Devon town of Hartland might seem remote, it has plenty to offer visitors. With three Pubs ( The Anchor Inn is the only pub with a restaurant serving food Sunday evenings ), as well as craft shops and potteries, it isn’t without attraction. The main street leading to the town square is lined with cottages. In the square is the church of St. John’s, a relatively new place of worship erected in the early 1800’s. It sits on the site of the former Town Hall of which only the 17th Century clock survives. At Hartland Quay visitors can enjoy a tour around the Shipwreck museum. The quay was once an important port, shipping granite and coal at the height of these industries. Hartland Point is one of the wildest and most rugged headlands in England. It is accessible by car and foot and offers breathtaking and unrivalled views of the North Devon coastline. Not far from Hartland is the tiny hamlet of Stoke where the church of St Nectan’s can be found, a Welsh missionary murdered in Stoke in the 6th Century. The church is widely known as the Cathedral of North Devon and its history and architecture make it well worth a visit. Hartland is the perfect picture of coastal Devon.
