Lydford in West Devon lies on the site of an Anglo-Saxon town, “Hlidan”. Hlidan was founded around 880AD as an important stronghold of King Alfred the Great. Lydford still retains roadways of Hlidan and a Saxon defensive earth-work wall. The church of St. Petrok is dedicated to a 6th Century Welsh monk. It displays beautifully carved bench-ends, depicting a Saint or holy man surrounded by words or animals and plants. Beside the church stands a roofless Norman castle. The castle can be visited any time, but with deep drops and steep stone staircases inside, caution is advised. South of the village centre, a stone bridge fords the Lyd. Beneath this bridge the river drops away sharply to form the Lydford Gorge. The deep and beautiful tree-lined ravine runs for 1.5 miles. At the bridge end is the “Devil’s Cauldron”, and at the other the 30 metre tall “White Lady Waterfall”. Walkers can enjoy spectacular views down into the gorge from the banks of the Lyd. However, walking is strenuous and with deep, narrow, uneven and slippery paths, great care is needed. Lydford is ideally placed for walks within the Dartmoor National Park or relaxing days out in the Devon countryside.
