Sampford Courtenay is a hushed village on the northern edge of Dartmoor National Park in Devon, with a clutch of beautiful cob and thatched cottages found in the narrow lanes. Five Medieval stone crosses mark the way into the village, leading to the square where the 15th Century Church of St Andrews dominates the scene, Step over the Artists if visiting during the Summer months as the explosion of colour in the tapestry of flowers are rarely beaten. Famed for it’s bravery of the ‘Prayer Book Uprising’ in 1549, the area is steeped in history, now home to just over five hundred people. Whether it’s painting, or walking Mother Natures wonders are fully displayed whatever the season, history buffs can marvel at the prowess of the ancient inhabitants when they gaze upon the Nine Maidens Stone Circle, or there is also the ruins of Okehampton Castle which stands high above the River Okement. Or how about the last castle to be built, Castle Drogo has stunning views over the Teign Gorge, fabulous interiors with 17th Century Tapestries, fine furniture, and toys, outside enchanting grounds beckon their visitor to a game of croquet. Or perhaps the three waterwheels, and demonstrations, will encourage a visit to Finch Foundry.
