South Brent is a busy village set within the River Avon Valley on the southern slopes of Dartmoor, home to nearly 3ooo thousand people. The bright colour washed cottages line Wellington Square, and the ancient church of St Petroch has an impressive Norman Tower. The Pack Hose Bridge leads to dramatic and moody Moorland, or there is Ugborough Beacon which bestows fabulous views, a little further and the Avon Dam will certainly please, or maybe Dendles Wood Nature Reserve will tick all of the boxes. For a glimpse into intriguing history it has to be Buckfast Abbey set within meadows edging the banks of the River Dart, home to Benedictine Monks, a tour of the church unravels mysteries, complete with honey bees hard at work, a produce Shop where items are made by Nuns and Monks from all over the world, a Book Shop that tempts her visitor to linger longer than they should, venture to the rear of the shop and intriguing exhibits tells of times long past. Animal lovers will adore the Butterfly and Dartmoor Otter Sanctuary, or there is always Penny Well Farm and Wildlife Centre where Birds Of Prey astound, animals, Go karts and even Tractor Rides are the order of the day.
