Set in the Peak District of England, the Derbyshire village of Ashford-in-the-Water gets its name from its proximity to the river Wye. Local industries included lead mining, candle making and in 1748, Henry Watson discovered Ashford Marble, a limestone that when polished, made the black marble perfect as a background to mosaic and inlaid patterns. Although it has died out today, Ashford church houses one of the finest examples of an inlaid tabletop. In tribute to the candle makers of the past, the Candle House stands proud on the site of the old candle making factory in Greaves Lanes – greaves are how the workers referred to the dregs of melted tallow. Although most of the church of the Holy Trinity was rebuilt in 1868, features still remain dating back to the 1200’s, including the south door. And from a mere 400 years later, a chalice from the mid 1600’s. Well dressing week is a highlight of the village year, with visitors flocking to see examples of this ancient local custom. A quiet, peaceful holiday retreat for those who enjoy pastoral life, Ashford-in-the-Water has two pubs, one being the Ashford Arms, once a coaching inn welcoming weary travellers since the 1700’s.
