Set in the heart of Derbyshire, Amber Valley offers glorious scenery which forms the background for tranquil villages and bustling market towns. Within the green fields and dense woodlands are a range of attractions that will appeal to all ages and interests. The River Derwent flows through Amber Valley, forging the route of the National Heritage Corridor®.
There are excellent transport attractions: at the Midland Railway Centre, enjoy the nostalgia of the era of steam and take in the numerous exhibits at the impressive Museum. Just a few miles away, CrichTramway Village is the home of the National Tramway Museum which offers unlimited journeys along the tramway route with spectacular views across open countryside.
Wingfield Manor is set on the hillside overlooking South Wingfield village. This was the setting for the famous Babington plot involving Mary Queen of Scots, that changed the course of history. To the south is Kedleston Hall, which is one of the largest collections of rhododendrons and azaleas to be found anywhere in the country. Adjacent to the River Gardens at Belper, the Derwent Valley Visitor Centre is based in the historic North Mill, part of a recently granted World Heritage Site.
The history and heritage of the Amber Valley links it with famous names worldwide. Samuel Slater was a Belper apprentice who travelled to Pawtucket in Rhode Island to establish America's cotton mass production. Another local man, Robert Watchorn became a Commissioner of Immigration at Ellis Island in 1905, whilst Florence Nightingale of Holloway was the daughter of a local landowner and became perhaps the most famous woman in the world.
Easily accessible from National and Regional airports or by rail or road, Amber Valley is well worth including in your visit.
