Heanor town is situated in the Amber Valley region of Derbyshire, about 8 miles N.E of Derby. Once a county market town, it's growth, along with that of it's suburbs, Codnor, Marlpool and Loscoe, dates from the industrial revolution which brought the canals and railways to the region. The town was once on the route of the world's longest tramway which ran from Nottingham to Ripley.

Coal mining was once the dominant industry, but all the pits have now closed down and landscaping of damaged land has been given much attention. A reclaimed opencast site, together with the parkland, woods, hill and lake of the former Shipley Hall is now a pleasant country park. Here also can be found the American Adventure, a busy theme park providing much local employment. Population 23,000
