Morley village in Derbyshire lies approximately 5 miles North East of Derby and is a residential area surrounded by working farms. Brackley Gates, site of abandoned quarries, is now a wildlife reserve managed by Derbyshire Wildlife Trust and offers spectacular views of the North of the county. Still to be seen in Almshouse Lane, the 17th Century almshouses were originally erected to accommodate “6 poor, lame or impotent men”. The Three Horse Shoes pub is what was once the old village blacksmith’s Smithy. The church of St. Matthew houses one of the finest collections of late Medieval glass in England. On the route of the Roman Portway near the church stands a strange moated hump about 20 feet high. There are no definitive records as to what it was and while some believe it served the purpose as a defensive position, others think it was used as a lookout post. Either way, it is a reminder of the dark days when Britain was pillaged by invaders. For golfers, South of Morley is the Breadsall Priory hotel which boasts a renowned golf course. Before it became a hotel, the Priory was once the home of Erasmus Darwin, grandfather of Charles Darwin.
