South Normanton is a large busy village in the county of Derbyshire, and is home to over eight thousand people. From its humble beginnings of tiny agricultural community dating back centuries, it grew and expanded dramatically when the coal mines circled the village which encouraged workers to move here, however, mining was not the only industry to thrive, there was also the Framework Knitters who made stockings here in the 18th and 19th centuries. There is a wide range of houses and buildings in various styles, from small terraced houses to the grand 15th Century mansion of Carnfield Hall which shares its interesting tale. A stroll down the narrow alleys of the Old Market Place or High Street will unveil a wide choice of shops, there are pubs and restaurants to try, and even a small weekly market on offer. The 13th Century church of St Michael and All Angels is a link with the past where its clock and six bells are securely housed in an impressive 15th Century pinnacled tower. This busy village sits in the beautiful Derbyshire countryside which will tempt cyclists and walkers to explore the footpaths and enjoy Mother Nature's wonders.
