The village of Claverdon is the archetypical village of Warwickshire set amongst the rolling green fields the village boasts a wealth of architecture and its own village green and chestnut tree. Just by the village green is the village shop with its quaint thatched roof. Lying to the south east of Henley in Arden the village church dates from the 15th century although it was partially rebuilt in the 19th century and today seems, very much as is was intended to, watch over the village from its high point. A stroll around the lanes will reveal other superb buildings, the Old Forge, with its unusually horseshoe shaped doorway, or the malthouse with its black and white beams looking much as it did when it was originally built. Claverdon though also is home to an enigma when it comes to buildings for it is here that there is the Stone Building and no-one seems to know why this unusual building exists. There are a number of theories as to what it is for but the favourite is that this is all that remains of a former grand mansion house. Claverdon is set deep in the Warwickshire countryside and the surrounding lanes make this a joy to visit – especially on a quiet summers day.
