Dunchurch in Warwickshire lies around ten miles south east of Coventry with many of the local houses built in the 18th century however a short walk around will reveal some interesting timber framed properties dating back to the 17th century. Dunchurch despite its tranquil setting though does have a dark secret for it was here in 1605 that the co-conspirators in Guy Fawkes gunpowder plot waited to here news of his venture to blow up the Houses of Parliament. At one time, because of its unique and well positioned location on the coaching route the village of Dunchurch was an important staging post and it is said that at one time there were around 40 coaching inns in the village – virtually every property in fact. Today Dunchurch retains much of its character, St Peter Church – dating from the 12th century (but largely rebuilt in the 14th and 15th century) still dominates the north side of the square, the timber framed buildings with their thatched roofs are a visual joy and it is no wonder that this remains a popular place to either live in or visit. Around an hour by train to London and with the major motorway network close by and Birmingham International Airport just half an hour away it is easy to understand the appeal of this quaint and picturesque village.
