The village of Kineton lies to the west of the M40, south of Stratford on Avon in the rolling South Warwickshire countryside. Dating back to possibly pre 11th century the village of Kineton is mentioned in the Domesday Book, on the outskirts of the village are the remains of a motte and bailey castle known as King John’s but even before this is it is believed that the Romans held a settlement close by. The name of Kineton is supposedly derived from ancient times when a cattle or “kine” market was held here but this is still the subject of debate within the community. Around the mid 17th century there was a great battle near here at Edgehill and today artefacts are still occasionally unearthed. The village though found fame through one John Newton who lived from 1725 to 1807 and for a while lived in the village of Kineton where he wrote the words to “Amazing Grace” in 1772. Today the village of Kineton boasts a thriving community, local schools and local stores and three churches and with the Defence and Distribution Depot located close to the village it is easy to understand how this village has grown.
