Aspatria is a town in the northern part of Cumbria, positioned above the Ellen River Valley, and is home to just over three thousand people. It dates as far back into history as the Saxons, although Iron Age Settlers were nearby on Beacon Hill, Romans, and Viking Invaders have all left their mark. Its surrounded by pleasing rich green countryside and is only six miles or so from the sea. There is an impressive red sandstone church which sits on the site of an earlier Norman church, dedicated to St Kentigern which has a pinnacled tower. Although not much remains of the earlier church, visitors can still see a Medieval font, colourful stained glass windows, and even a Holy Well. The town nudges the border of the Lake District National Park so walkers and cyclists are often kept busy, whilst those who prefer to explore the town will certainly uncover a myriad of shops, bars, and restaurants with tasty morsels to try, and there is even an ancient Coaching Inn dating back to the 1700's, which continues to play its part to visitors just as it did when Aspatria was on a coaching route in centuries past. The town has an industrial legacy of coal mining and stone quarrying, together with dairy farming which today provides milk to a large creamery.
