Although Barbon is in Cumbria, scenically it has a lot more in common with the nearby Yorkshire Dales; indeed it sits in Barbondale, a pretty part of the Lune valley. Barbon, three miles North of Kirkby Lonsdale, is a village of white-painted cottages and solid stone walls, with a church that looks more ancient than it is: St Bartholomew’s was built in the perp style by Lancaster architects Paley and Austin in 1893, but it does incorporate some carvings from the chapel that preceded it. One of the white-painted buildings certainly worth a visit is the 17th-century Barbon Inn, formerly a coaching inn. The River Lune is about a mile to the west of the tiny settlement, which has a population of fewer than 300 people these days, though once it was more. The Lune is a well known salmon and trout river, and the Barbon Beck that runs through the village feeds it, and has some fishing too. For sport of a different kind there is the 18-hole Kirkby Lonsdale Golf Club just the other side of the A683, and a little further south the 9-hole Casterton golf course. But Barbon’s real claim to sporting fame is the hill climbing course at Italianate Barbon Manor. The course for most of the year is the Manor’s drive, but three times annually it hosts motor sport events (two for cars, one for motorbikes) on the 890 yard run.
