Brampton, in the north east corner of Cumbria, is a market town of some 4,000 people, said to have been founded in the 7th century. Henry II granted the town its charter, and the first market was held here in 1252. Much of the building is in local red sandstone, but the abiding impression will be of traditional Cumbrian white-washed houses. The area can claim some earlier roots though, with the Romans having built Hadrian’s Wall just a stroll away, a fact that is commemorated by a statue to the emperor in the town centre. A couple of miles outside the town are Gelt Woods, now an RSPB reserve, but once housing a Roman quarry. A stone there bears an inscription made by a Roman legionnaire in the 3rd century. Stone from Hadrian’s Wall was used in building the town’s old church, of which only the chancel remains. But for once the replacement is probably more interesting than the original: St Martin’s is the only church designed by Philip Webb, the pre-Raphaelite architect. Of particular note in the church are the stained glass windows, made in William Morris’s studio to designs by Sir Edward Burne-Jones. Also worthy of a visit is the large motte on the eastern side of the town, standing 135 feet above its surroundings, and in the town centre the octagonal Moot Hall, built in 1817, in front of which stands a bull ring used for baiting the animals for “sport” in past times. Walkers will enjoy the rolling countryside in the area, and both walkers and the boating fraternity will like the space offered by Talkin Tarn, just to the south east of Brampton, with wooded walks and 65 acres of water.
