The tiny hamlet of Ings stands between Kendal and Windermere on the A591, in the heart of the Lake District National Park. The settlement is just a short drive to Kendal and a brisk walk to Windermere, but is a world away from either of those centres, although it provides a great base for visiting them, just as it does for walking on the fells to the north and south of the hamlet, and for fishing in Windermere and other waters in the surrounding countryside. Ings is a collection of stone cottages, some of them painted in the traditional Cumbrian white, with a lovely church at its heart. St Anne’s is that relative rarity in this part of the world, a Georgian church, this one built in the mid-18th century with funding from merchant Robert Bateman. Its nicely proportioned square tower and modest but avowedly Georgian entrance are elegant witnesses to an elegant era of architecture. The soul taken care of by St Anne’s, the body can repair to the celebrated Watermill Inn, which brews its own range of innovative and traditional beers. Just a mile away too is the village of Staveley, boasting three pubs and the shops necessary for those staying in the area’s many rental cottages and camping sites.
