The area of Underskiddaw, as the name would logically imply, lies at the foot of Skiddaw, the fourth highest peak in England at 3054 feet. Just a few minutes by car along the A591 from Keswick, taking in the villages of Millbeck and Little Crossthwaite, and you are there, with the forests and mountain of Skiddaw to the north and east, Bassenthwaite Lake no distance away to the west, and lush farmland separating the two. If a change from walking in the wilds is needed, then Mire House is well worth a visit, though the gardens, heather maze and woodland playgrounds will keep you rooted in the natural world. The poetry walk at Mire House is a reminder of its literary links: Carlyle, Wordsworth and Tennyson to name but three. This is the area for those who like their Lake District quiet, with grey stone cottages dotted about the land, including plenty available for visitors, or the impressive Lyzzick Hall country house hotel with its extensive private grounds. The thriving town of Keswick with its pleasant mix of the old fashioned – pitch and putt and great pubs – and the new – bistros and wine bars – at three or four miles away is really just on the doorstep, but visitors to Underskiddaw will feel a hundred miles away.
