Newton Aycliffe is located in County Durham, in the Sedgefield constituency and is officially the oldest ‘new town’, in the north of England, founded in 1946 under the New Towns Act of 1946. Newton is of course, from the term ‘new town. South of the town is the village of Aycliffe which, prior to development, was previously known as ‘Aycley’ and was the site of a Saxon settlement. The name Aycley was derived from the Saxon words ‘Ac’ meaning oak and ‘ley’ meaning a clearing although another old name was Yacley. It was the location of a church Synods in AD782 and AD789. Newton Aycliffe was, during the Second World War, a key element in the manufacturing of ammunitions as the marshy landscape that surrounded it, shrouded in mist and fog, provided ideal cover against the Luftwaffe. Huge grass-covered munitions factories were built and serviced by the nearby railway lines which formed part of the 1825 Stockton to Darlington railway.Thousands of women worked in these factories, braving incredible dangers for which they became known as ‘Ayciffe’s Angels’. The factories were eventually replaced with manufacturing buildings that then became the industrial district and saw many companies move there after the war and become the towns main employers until the 1980s when the council stopped building homes and private property developments and housing associations continued development.
