The town of Stanley is centred on top of a hill between Chester-le-Street and Consett in County Durham in northern England, southwest of Gateshead and is the second largest town in Derwentside after Consett. A former mining town, Stanley at one time was separate from the villages of east Stanley and South Stanley but now they are blended into one town and no longer hold separate names. Another village called Southmoor was also referred to as West Stanley. The first mention of Stanley appears in 1211 although some Neolithic and Roman remains have been found in the area. The name Stanley is derived from Old English for ‘Stoney Field’. The town and nearby villages grew during the coal mining era, with several collieries opening in the area. West Stanley Colliery was the site of one of the worst coal mining disasters in British history when over 160 people were killed in the Burns Pit Disaster in 1909. Since the 1960’s the collieries closed, and Stanley has undergone economic hard times. With the further loss of major employers at EverReady in Tanfield, British Steel and Shotley Bridge General Hospital the town took a further blow when the Metro Centre retail-shopping complex opened in Gateshead. The town of ‘Old Stanley’ has largely died with many shops and pubs closed. After petitioning the government, a new town council is currently carrying out refurbishments with the opening of a new shopping centre and many other amenities.
