Nestling in the heart of Cheshire Beeston is probably most famous for its castle located high up on a sandstone outcrop some 400 feet high up overlooking the Cheshire Plains with views across the Wirral and Liverpool. Originally a hillside fort from the Bronze Age traces of this early use is still in evidence today. Work on the Castle wasn’t until started until 1226 and for around 400 years it was used as a castle defending England. It was also rumored to house a vast treasure hidden within it by Richard II. Around the middle of the 17th century the castle was dismantled by Order of Parliament leaving the extensive ruins that are still worth visiting today – provided you are fit enough to scale it! Today Beeston is also locally famous for its markets which see the village grow considerably with visitors, especially for the famous Bank Holiday Monday Markets. For those who have enjoyed the market, or indeed a walk up to the Castle then there are a number of local pubs and restaurants to help refresh. Beeston is around half an hour from Chester but for more immediate facilities Tarporley is located around three miles away and offers a wide range of leisure and retail facilities as well as local schools.
