Events in Northophall | 10 Places to Stay
Not to be confused with the adjacent village of Northop – Northop Hall also lies in the County of Flintshire in North East Wales. Close by during the 19th century there were coal mines in the area and the village grew around this activity. Today the mine is long gone – it was said to be located not far from Northop Hall, a Victorian building that today is a hotel set in some nine acres of gardens. Northop Hall also has two pubs, the Boar’s Head and the Black Lion – known locally as Bottom Monkey and Top Monkey respectively – rumour has it that this story relates to an explorer who on returning from Africa brought two monkeys – the truth may never be known though! St Mary’s Church is at the top of the village and can trace its history back to the 13th century, by the early 1800’s the church was in a poor state of dilapidation. It was subsequently demolished and in 1848 the new and present church was consecrated on the same site as the original. The village itself is in a handy location for the A55 Expressway and access to Chester and the local area is relatively easy along hedged country lanes and roads.
