The earliest recorded man made articles found in the Runcorn area date back to somewhere between 1750 and 1550 BC. The Romans passed through the area on their way to Chester and after them the Anglo Saxons used the place as an encampment to resist the Viking invasion from the Mersey. Runcorn though was not any particular settlement at this time, historical records show that it was mainly meadow and woodland. Runcorn today is made up of two distinct parts – the Old Town adjacent to the River Mersey with the road bridge to Widnes dominating part of the skyline but with new modern apartment developments springing up along the waters edge. Runcorn Old Town has for far too long been in the shadow of Runcorn New Town. The New Town was a town planners dream that was built in the 1970’s and 80’s. Lain out with dedicated bus lanes to encourage more use of public transport the new estates that were built were each clearly defined and within the masterplan there were local schools and amenities for all – there was even Shopping City – where there were all the shops you required and the bus brought you to the door. This was in part detrimental to the Old Town where local business suffered as Shopping City was commuter and car friendly. Despite years of what seemed like competition betweenRuncorn Old Town and the New Town they are at last getting along – like two old relatives living together that had fallen out years ago they have now decided that it is better if they work as one. The overall effect is that the whole area is now Runcorn, a town that can offer you a traditional high street or, just a car trip away, a shopping mall. Runcorn can offer you easy rail and road access from here in Cheshire to virtually anywhere in the UK or quiet walks along the canal, it can offer history and green fields all are found within easy reach of this town.
