Unique to the United Kingdom this peninsula of land is bounded on one side by the River Dee and on the other by the River Mersey and in many ways this reflects how The Wirral has developed. The side of the Wirral overlooking the Mersey has an industrial background, in the mid 1800’s Birkenhead was starting to build ships, heavy engineering and trade was to feature heavily from Birkenhead down the River Mersey side of the estuary towards Ellesmere Port where today the Vauxhall car factory is located. In 1888 the Lever Brothers conceived and started work on Port Sunlight, an ambitious project to build homes for their employees. The original Lever Brothers works eventually becoming part of the Unilever Group and their factories still employ many local people whilst Port Sunlight remains testament to the good work that the Lever Brothers accomplished. The side of the Wirral overlooking North Wales became a desirable place to live – instead of views across the River Mersey to Liverpool Docks with its associated industries this side of the Wirral offered its residents views across the River Dee towards North Wales and as such is more picturesque. Places such as Parkgate where people took in the fresh sea air and enjoyed strolling along the promenade which is still in existence today. The Wirral today offers visitors and residents alike a varied and interesting range of towns and villages.
