The village where the cheese isn’t made, though it still has the pub (The Bell) that claims to be where it was first sold to coaching passengers in the 18th century and thus gained national fame. In fact, with a population of little over 3000, Stilton still boasts three pubs (the others being The Talbot & the Stilton Cheese Inn), a post office, primary school and a mini-market, along with a very fine ancient church, St Mary Magdelene, thought to be 13th century. Stilton, about 70 miles from London and six from Peterborough, was once a vital coaching stop on the Great North Road, and at the height of that trade had some 14 inns and pubs. Nowadays most traffic bypasses the place on the A1(M), but it is still easily reached by car from junction 16 of that route, and remains a good place to break a journey or to overnight in the pleasant rising country beyond the Cambridgeshire fens. With four mentions in Domesday Book it is clear the place was of some importance in the late 11th century. It had probably been occupied in the Stone Age, and Roman Ermine Street (the precursor to the Great North Road) ran through it, Roman presence locally evidenced by archaeological finds, which coincidentally included a cheese press. Nowadays it is a quiet place, something of a dormitory for Peterborough: but every May Day its character changes during the holding of the annual cheese rolling championships.
