The traditional town by the River Ouzel that is to the southwest of Milton Keynes, retaining its own identity, is Bletchley. It grew up originally under the Normans but expansion really happened when the railway arrived in 1870. The vibrant new town of Milton Keynes has much to offer (including accommodation) but so does Bletchley, with the river and the Grand Union Canal (forming part of National Cycle Network) providing scenic towpaths, the Windmill Hill Golf Course (18-hole, par 73), the Blue Lagoon Nature Reserve, the Brunel shopping centre, bustling High Street and plenty of parking. Undoubtedly Bletchley is most famous for Bletchley Park, or Station X as it was known in its former capacity! The beautiful Victorian mansion with 4 acres of grounds can now be hired for conferences and housed the secret Enigma code-breakers during World War II. The world’s first electronic computer, Colossus, came into being in 1944 (a code-cracking computer) and played a major role in the D-Day Landings. 10 Colossi, each an improvement on the last, were created and helped Allied victory but at the end of the war all machines were dismantled and technical information destroyed. A Colossus has however been rebuilt, work continues to this day and can be seen at the museum here.
