There is a small group of villages in south-east Buckinghamshire, on the edge of The Chiltern Hills, called The Chalfonts. Chalfont Road Village, or Little Chalfont as it has been known since 1925, is one such village. It now has a population of about 5,000 but didn’t expand until the arrival of the railway in 1889. Since then, a community has developed around the Metropolitan Line station – becoming part of Betjemen’s “Metroland” and being just outside the M25, only 30 miles from central London. An ideal base for both work and pleasure. Little Chalfont has a parade of shops, including pubs and several restaurants. There are B&Bs close-by in Chalfont St Giles or hotels in nearby Amersham. In the village centre is Sugar Loaf Inn – a 1930s pub, serving “gastro-type” food in a real ale serving welcoming atmosphere! For nature-lovers there is a walk from Chesham amidst the Chiltern hills and valleys, through the Chess Valley and up to Chenies Tudor Manor and Little Chalfont. Or there’s the Little Chalfont Golf Club which is an 18-hole, par 70 course set in friendly, wooded surroundings welcoming visitors.
