Nestled in the valley of the Chiltern Hills is Saunderton - a small village a few miles north west of High Wycombe and near Princes Risborough. The village name is believed to be of Anglo Saxo origin, it was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 and in the 18th century a workhouse was established there due to its ideal remote and rural location. Confusingly, Saunderton railway station opened in 1901 but was 2.5 miles from the orginal village! This National Rail station is on the A4010 and another community (also called Saunderton) has emerged. There are various attractions in the area, i.e. Hughenden Manor, West Wycombe Caves, etc and the Hearing Dog Training Centre is based a mile away. Not least appealing is the walking opportunities offered by the Chiltern Hills, with their abundance of wildlife! The focal point of the village is The Rose and Crown, which is the local pub, serves food and is a hotel. It is a former wayside inn but has a contemporary character and is known for its events, such as live music, wine tasting, etc. There is also Hunters Gate B&B nearby, with other accommodation on offer in surrounding towns, such as Chinnor.
