Stony Stratford is “The Jewel of Milton Keynes” in North Buckinghamshire –one of the most desirable residential areas in the city. This busy market town began life in Norman times, becoming a sizeable settlement by the late Middle Ages but suffering great fires in 1736 and 1742, destroying most of the town and meaning that the current High Street dates from the 18th and 19th centuries mainly, except for the chapel of St Mary Magdalen which escaped devastation. This High Street was redecorated to a Development Corporation colour scheme in the 1960s and is now a conservation area, along with the wildlife of Ouse Valley Park. Watling Street runs through the centre of the town and was the reason why this became a major resting place with many coaching inns, but with the advent of the railways, coaching traffic ceased. This historically rich town (where the phrase “cock and bull stories” originated due to gossip rife between 2 pubs, amongst other fascinating facts) still has 9 pubs, many restaurants, some cafes and a few take-aways. Accommodation here is The Cock hotel and it’s stood in the High Street since 1470 (restored from fire damage of course), otherwise Milton Keynes can offer a variety for all budgets, along with many other attractions, not forgetting that Silverstone Racing Circuit and Towcester racecourse are near by.
