Woburn Sands is 6 miles South East of Central Milton Keynes and merges on its Eastern side with the Bedfordshire village of Aspley Guise. It should not be confused with the other small town of Woburn 2 miles away. This thriving little town has 5 pubs, several hotels/B&Bs and extensive high street shopping, including garden centres nearby. Much of the residential areas are surrounded by enchanting woodland and heather, which grows in the sandy soil. The town is easy to reach by train or off the A5130 between Milton Keynes and Leighton Buzzard and you can park right outside the shops, there are two car parks just off the High Street or in adjoining roads. The name Woburn Sands is derived from “Woburn”, being the nearest market town that was well known, and the mineral “Sands” extracted in this district, known as “Fullers Earth”. It is yellow, very fine sand and was historically used by wool fullers to clean sheep’s wool before it was carded and spun. It has been dug in this area since at least 1539. There are facilities for tennis, bowls and snooker, as well as cricket and golf for beginners to champions at courses nearby in Wavendon, Aspley Guise and Woburn.
