Emersons Green is not a quintessential English village steeped in ancient history but is perhaps typically English in another way. It sits on the northern outskirts of Bristol in an area that was once farmland. The area was earmarked for development as part of the Avon County Structure Plan in 1985 and was built during the 1990s. This type of stretching of the green belt is something England will see more of as demand for housing continues to grow. Built from scratch, the residential area has all the shopping amenities you might expect from a modern development with several major retailers situated in the Emersons Green retail village. Three pubs currently serve the area; The Emersons Green Beefeater, The Langley Arms and The Mill House. Just across the A4174 in what was originally the outskirts of Downend is The Folly, which pre-dates the Emersons Green development. Like many suburban developments Emersons Green suffers from traffic problems. Getting into Bristol from the area can be troublesome due the congestion on the Bristol Ring Road and the M32. Public transport services are minimal so perhaps the best way to get around is by cycle, the Bristol to Bath cycle track is nearby.
