The historic town of Nailsea in Somerset has a thriving and well maintained town centre. The history of the town has been partially shaped by the presence of pennant sandstone, which has been quarried in the area since Roman times. Coal was also mined at Nailsea from 1507 until the last pit closed in 1882, beaten by the larger mines in South Wales. The presence of coal bought John Robert Lucas to establish a glassworks at Nailsea in 1788, partly to meet the needs for window glass bought about by the Industrial Revolution. By the mid 19th century this had grown into the fourth largest glassworks in Britain. The glassworks closed in 1873, but Nailsea glass, items made by workers at the end of their shift, is still sought after today. For the nature lover, a visit to the Stockway North Nature Reserve is a must. The Reserve is situated in a former quarry which has been part filled and allowed to regenerate naturally. There's a market in a car park near the town centre every Tuesday. The Royal Oak pub is where one of Nailsea's famous sons Adge Cutler (former lead singer of The Wurzels) helped the band record their album 'Live at The Royal Oak'.
