A mile or two northwest of Newbury, Stockcross in Berkshire is almost but not quite a suburb of that town, retaining a certain village character thanks in part to those prerequisites of rural life a couple of pubs, a post office doubling as the village shop, a quaintly pretty church (which though early Victorian avoided that era’s too often poor taste in ecclesiastical architecture), and an actively used community centre, Sutton Hall. It also has something that in this country not many settlements whatever their size can boast, namely a 5-star hotel with Michelin-starred restaurant. Easily reached by road – sadly its halt on the Lambourn Valley Railway closed long ago – it sits on the B4000 that runs between junction 14 of the M4 and the Newbury interchange of the A34 – and with some decidedly grand houses and three golf courses nearby, Stockcross has attracted commuters working in London and Oxford as well as more locally – the capital only an hour’s journey away, and in return it attracts those living in the metropolis and seeking some quiet leisure beyond it.
