Situated 5 miles to the north-west of Hastings and just off the A2100 (the Hastings to Battle) road lies the village of Crowhurst; known as Croghyrst to the Saxons, the village was laid to waste by the invading Normans in 1066 just prior to the Battle of Hastings. It was first recorded in a charter of 771 in which King Offa of Mercia give the Bishop of Selsey a parcel of land in the village, in return the Bishop built the first church. After the conquest the manor was given to Robert, Count of Eu. In the 12th century Richard I gave it to Sir Walter de Scotney after his exploits in the 3rd crusade, Sir Walter forfeited the manor in 1259 after being found guilty (and executed) for the attempted poisoning of the Earl of Gloucestershire; the ruins of his 12th century manor house can be seen to the south of the church. The Pelham family started their long association with Crowhurst in 1412 after Henry IV gave the manor to Sir John Pelham after Sir John`s part in the capture of the French King during Henry`s French campaign, Henry awarded Sir John the French Kings Sword belt and a Buckle became the emblem of the Pelham family. Sir John built the present church, St.George`s. Only the tower remains of the original the rest being re-built in the 19th century by W M Teulon. Crowhurst Park, once the home of Thomas Papillon, dates from the 17th century and commands some of the finest land and sea views in the county. The house was host to the Canadian army prior to the D-day landings, in 1973 it became a caravan park and leisure club. The friendly atmosphere, excellent village pub (the Plough) make Crowhurst an ideal spot from which to explore the delights of Kent.
