Hassocks is a fairly modern village which only really started growing with the coming of the railways in 1841, but the name is older it is derived from the Old English `hessuc` = `clump of course grass`. Hassocks was the crossing point of two Roman roads, a north/south road and the east/west road from Midhurst to just north of Lewes. A Roman cemetery has been found near the crossroads close to the modern Stonepond crossroads were the A273 crosses the B2116; despite the presence of the cemetery and road junction no evidence of any settlement has yet been found. The railway opened in September 1841, it was in a cottage style with Italianate touches. It was first called Hassocks Gate after the toll gate on the turnpike road to Brighton to the west of the line (now the A273) but re-named plain Hassocks in 1881. The village has expanded since the 1950`s with many people moving to the area and commuting to both London & Brighton. The Congregational church was built in 1885 and a Victorian National School in 1877 - now the Hassocks Infant School; the row of terrace cottages next to the station date from the 1860`s. Hassocks has long been a draw for hikers, special trains were first run to Hassocks in 1861, and make an ideal base from which to explore this part of Sussex with the South Downs; Hurstpierpoint and Ditchling all within easy reach.
