The large, pleasant village of Newick sits in the Sussex Weald south of the Ashdown Forest (in days gone by the whole area was wooded) about 10 miles east of Haywards Heath. Newick pre-dates the Domesday Book (1086). Known as Nywyke by 1296, its name derives from the Old English `niwe -wic` = new farm. The village is situated mid-way between Winchester & Canterbury and made an ideal stopping off point between the two towns. The older part of the village is around a Green surrounded by houses and shops of many styles and ages. The village pump was installed to commemorate the diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria. The church was mostly rebuilt in the 13th century from a previous Norman building, and part of the nave wall near the porch and a window still survive. It remained largely untouched until 1886-7 when the nave was extended and a new chancel built. To the east of the church is the Old Rectory, a Georgian red brick house which was home to the Powells who were Rectors from 1818 to 1919. School Cottage was built in 1771 to house Lady Vernon's school for the education of 12 poor girls..."so as to make them better servants"! The Newick Horticultural Society was founded in the 1830s and still meets today with 2 annual shows. The area was famous for its soft fruit.
